Lesson Session – 1
Learn The melody
Welcome to your musical journey! In this blog post, we’ll guide you step-by-step through a structured learning process to help you master the beautiful song “Good, Good Father.” With each section, you’ll develop skills in listening, humming, visualizing, and playing on the piano.
Step 1: Listening and Understanding the Song
The foundation of learning any new song begins with active listening. Musicians often hear songs differently than others—they focus on the elements like melody, rhythm, and pitch. For “Good, Good Father,” start by listening carefully without humming or singing along. Notice how the melody flows and the pitch rises and falls. This focused listening will lay a strong foundation for the next steps.
Step 2: Humming the Melody
Once you’re familiar with the song’s melody, it’s time to hum along. Here’s a specific technique shared by our instructor for effective humming:
- Show all your teeth and lower your jaw, creating a one-finger distance between your teeth.
- Remove your finger, close your lips while maintaining that distance inside your mouth.
- Hum the melody, keeping the space between your teeth.
Practice this technique repeatedly as you follow along with the song. Humming helps you internalize the melody and prepares you to sing it confidently.
Step 3: Drawing the Melody
Music is not just about listening—it’s about visualizing too! This step helps you “see” the melody.
Take out your music book and draw a rectangle on one of the pages. As you listen to the song again, sketch the melody by drawing lines that go higher when the pitch rises and lower when it falls. This visual guide will give you a better sense of the song’s structure and flow.
Step 4: Mastering the Piano Melody
Now it’s time to bring the melody to life on the piano! Here’s how to get started:
- Locate the piano keys by identifying the pattern of two black keys and three black keys. This will help you navigate the 88 keys on the keyboard.
- Using a whiteboard marker, write the note names (A, B, C, D, E, F, G) on your keyboard. This will make it easier to find notes.
- Begin by playing the melody with your thumb on the C key and the remaining fingers for other notes.
Take your time and repeat the melody as often as needed to build coordination and accuracy.
Step 5: Video Lesson
